Going Green Checklist

If we do not change direction, we are likely to end up where we are headed. - A Chinese saying.

It seems that the issue of Global Warming is no longer in doubt. It is said that within the tourism industry, accommodation has the greatest environmental impact through its use of water (particularly in the laundering of linen), power and packaging.

A staggering ninety-four percent of the 24,500 travellers surveyed by Lonely Planet last year say travelling in a low impact way is the way they want to go and a raft of green initiatives will make it easier to tread lightly this year. - The Sydney Morning Herald January 2008.

The Association wishes to invite members and all those thinking of entering our industry to participate in assessing their environmental business practices and policies. A "Going Green" checklist has been developed and will be incorporated online and in the Association's Operating Guidelines in the future.

The checklist will act as a guideline not only for what you can do; it will provide you with the resources to help do so ... and, in many cases, to save money.

This checklist takes into account the financial cost to your business whilst encouraging you to take the steps toward protecting our environment.

Some of the items on our list may not be applicable to some members however the majority are capable of being retrofitted to existing properties sometimes with substantial subsidies from local, state or federal government.

Some items are more appropriate in the planning stage of new buildings or renovations.

The checklist includes savings and suggestions on energy use, water use, use of packaging and paper and recycling, cleaning and toiletry products and a whole host of additional items where energy can be saved and pollution reduced.

The changes that you make will have a positive effect on the environment for the future and for the future of our children.

It's Easy Being Green!

Going Green: Dual flush toilets

The checklist indicates that one should consider replacing 15 litre single flush toilet cisterns with dual flush models. The effectiveness of dual flush systems depends on the bowl having a smaller outlet than the old models, so simply installing a dual flush cistern without changing the bowl as well will not produce an efficient system – the small amount of water in the partial flush will not necessarily remove all that it should. Additionally, the difference in size of the cistern means that there is a likelihood of having to repaint the wall behind the cistern. Having said that, we have installed a dual-flush converter to two old single flush cisterns, and also reduced the amount of water in the cistern when full. This has resulted in reduced efficiency of a partial flush, but the full flush is effective, and we are saving a lot of water, which is important as we have to catch what we use.

For my notes can you please tell me how to 'reduce the amount of water in the cistern when full'
These are my amendments, can you tell me if this is correct.
"It may be best to install a dual-flush converter to old single flush cisterns, this will reduce the amount of water in the cistern when full. This will result in reduced efficiency of a partial flush, but the full flush is effective, and you can save a lot of water."
It is not quite right & i would appreciate your help as i have not done this modification.
Kind Regards Robyn

Dual flush toilets

The device we installed has a screw adjuster for the position of the float, so that the maximum water level in the cistern can be easily adjusted, without resort to brute force in bending the float arm. Additionally, the amount of water in the partial flush is adjustable, to cater for variations in the rest of the system.
Hope this helps.
